{"id":91,"date":"2025-11-28T20:46:57","date_gmt":"2025-11-28T19:46:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arteco.rigacci.org\/?page_id=91"},"modified":"2025-11-28T20:46:57","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T19:46:57","slug":"what-we-are-fighting-for","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/arteco.rigacci.org\/index.php\/what-we-are-fighting-for\/","title":{"rendered":"What we are fighting for"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#bdbbbb\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Maybe you didn&#8217;t know, but the fashion industry, particularly the &#8220;fast fashion&#8221; model, is a major contributor to global pollution and environmental degradation.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#c3bbbb\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Those are just a few of the conseguences caused by this sector:<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Climate Change and Air Pollution<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#d6cdcd\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Carbon Emissions:<\/strong> The industry is responsible for an estimated <strong>8% to 10% of global carbon dioxide emissions<\/strong>, which is more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined.<\/mark><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#d6cece\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Energy Consumption:<\/strong> The production of synthetic fibers like <strong>polyester<\/strong> and <strong>nylon<\/strong> is an energy-intensive process that relies heavily on fossil fuels, releasing significant amounts of greenhouse gases.<\/mark><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Water Pollution and Consumption<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#dddbdb\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Excessive Water Use:<\/strong> Textile production requires enormous amounts of water. For example, it can take up to <strong>10,000 liters of water<\/strong> to produce just one kilogram of cotton, or about 700 gallons for a single cotton shirt and 2,000 gallons for a pair of jeans.<\/mark><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#d1d1d1\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Chemical Wastewater:<\/strong> The dyeing and finishing stages are notorious for pollution. The industry is the <strong>second-largest polluter of water globally<\/strong>, responsible for about 20% of industrial water pollution. Wastewater often contains toxic chemicals like heavy metals, formaldehyde, and various dyes, which are frequently dumped untreated into rivers and streams, devastating aquatic life and harming human health in surrounding communities.<\/mark><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#d7d4d4\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Agricultural Runoff:<\/strong> Conventional cotton farming uses vast quantities of pesticides and fertilizers, which contaminate local water bodies.<\/mark><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Waste and Microplastics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#d0d0d0\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Textile Waste:<\/strong> The fast-fashion model encourages a &#8220;buy-throw-away&#8221; cycle. An estimated <strong>85% of all textiles<\/strong> go to dumps each year. Millions of tons of clothing end up in landfills where synthetic materials can take hundreds of years to decompose, leaching chemicals into the ground and air.<\/mark><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#cac9c9\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Microplastic Pollution:<\/strong> Washing synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon, and acrylic releases microscopic plastic fibers (microplastics) into wastewater. The laundering of synthetic textiles is estimated to account for as much as <strong>35% of all primary microplastics<\/strong> found in the ocean, which are ingested by marine life and enter the human food chain.<\/mark><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Labor Exploitation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#d7d5d5\" class=\"has-inline-color\">The push for low costs and rapid production in fast fashion is achieved by exploiting workers, primarily in developing countries across the Global South.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ded6d6\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Poverty Wages:<\/strong> Garment workers, 80% of whom are often young women between the ages of 18 and 24, are typically paid extremely low wages\u2014often far less than a <strong>living wage<\/strong> that covers basic needs. This traps workers and their families in poverty.<\/mark><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#dedcdc\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Unsafe Working Conditions:<\/strong> Factories, often referred to as &#8220;sweatshops,&#8221; frequently lack basic safety measures. This sistem which causes the death of a mount of workers is one of the deadly consequences of prioritizing profit over safety. Workers may also be exposed to toxic chemicals used in the manufacturing process.<\/mark><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#d3cfcf\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Excessive Hours and Forced Labor:<\/strong> Workers are often forced to work intensive, extended periods, sometimes up to <strong>80 hours per week<\/strong> or long shifts without adequate rest, especially during peak seasons. Reports of forced labor and child labor exist throughout the supply chain, including in the cultivation of materials like cotton.<\/mark><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#d5d5d5\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Denial of Workers&#8217; Rights:<\/strong> Employers frequently suppress the right to form and join a union, using threats, harassment, and dismissal to prevent collective bargaining.
